A commentator for the WSL match between Manchester United and Arsenal has come under fire for making an offensive remark about Manchester United and England player Ella Toone, 25, as reported by Bild.

Toone was substituted in the 74th minute of the match, and the camera captured her expression on the bench. At this moment, the commentator made a sarcastic comment, saying: “Ella Toone, still got a face like a smacked bum.”

The remark sparked outrage, with many rushing to defend Toone against the unjust attack. The situation was further aggravated by the fact that Toone had recently lost her father, with whom she had been very close.

“There was no sympathy, just unnecessary and typical nonsense from some male, misogynistic commentators directed at women footballers,” read one of the reactions.

According to Bild, the WSL is investigating the incident, and the commentator has since apologized for his words.

In 2023, Ella Toone, alongside her England teammate Alessia Russo, appeared on the cover of a special issue of Elle UK dedicated to the Women's World Cup, where she spoke out against sexism in football.
