Houghton spent years fighting against pay inequality and successfully brought about positive changes. In an interview with The Guardian, she shared:
"Women, like men, play for the England national team, yet they earn 15 times less than we do. Is that fair? I bit the bullet and thought, 'Alright, we need to do something about this.' I’m proud that we’ve managed to change how companies see us as athletes and to achieve fairness."
On October 25, Houghton was honored as a guest at a women’s friendly match at Wembley between England and Germany. The former national team captain was ceremoniously celebrated upon her retirement, receiving the recognition she truly deserves.
