Peñarol faces a major setback in their already challenging start to 2025. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Eduardo Darias, a key figure in the team, suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his knee, requiring surgery and sidelining him for nearly the entire season.

The 27-year-old midfielder, instrumental in securing the 2024 Uruguayan Championship, had been experiencing discomfort since the middle of last year, when a similar injury temporarily took him out of action. In October, he traveled to Buenos Aires for treatment, avoiding surgery then, but now surgical intervention is unavoidable.

This news exacerbates the Carboneros' crisis: with just six points in six Apertura rounds, Diego Aguirre's team is in 12th place and has suffered defeats in two classic matches against Nacional.

Added to this is the squad's instability, which renewed its trust in Darias: in December, the club paid half a million dollars for 55% of his contract from Deportivo Maldonado and extended his contract until 2027.

"Eduardo must make a decision, but everything indicates that surgery is inevitable. Perhaps this is the moment," said President Ignacio Ruglio in an interview with El Observador.

Darias managed to play only two matches in the Apertura, scoring one goal. With the transfer window closed, Aguirre will have to rebuild the team without external replacements, in a year where the great team's own expectations clash with reality.
