The closing stages of the 2026 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland were marked by one of the tournament’s most talked-about incidents.

Swiss striker Breel Embolo found himself at the center of attention after a clash with Leandro Paredes. At first, the referee booked the Argentine midfielder, but after consulting the replay, he reversed the decision and gave Embolo a second yellow card for simulation, which automatically turned into a red.

As he left the pitch, Embolo couldn’t hold back his emotions, leaving for the tunnel in tears, while the episode immediately sparked fierce debate among fans and pundits alike.

However, video replays released after the match confirmed the referee’s call. The footage clearly shows that Argentina’s Leandro Paredes did not touch Embolo, who blatantly dived.
