Scandal! Mourinho skips the press conference. Why?
José Mourinho chose silence after one of Real Madrid's most controversial matches of the season.
Details: Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho unexpectedly refused to attend the post-match press conference following his team's 1-0 victory over Villarreal in the eighth round of La Liga. Journalists were waiting for the Portuguese manager at the Santiago Bernabéu, but the club's press office informed them that he would not appear. Mourinho also declined to speak to Real Madrid TV.
According to COPE, Mourinho deliberately avoided speaking to journalists because he feared that emotional comments about the refereeing could lead to a suspension. The Portuguese coach wants to remain on the touchline for Real Madrid's upcoming matches against Sevilla and Barcelona.
The match against Villarreal was filled with controversy. Vinicius Junior received a straight red card after pulling Nathan Saliba's hair during an attacking move. The Brazilian's goal was subsequently disallowed following a VAR review. Mourinho himself was booked, while five Real Madrid players also received yellow cards.
According to AS, Mourinho explained to the club that he did not want to risk punishment by making statements immediately after such an emotional encounter. The coach has not publicly commented on his decision.
It is worth noting that Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning the 2011/12 La Liga title with a record 100 points.
