Kylian Mbappé has finally explained the gesture that caused a major stir in Spain.

Details: The Real Madrid forward addressed the controversy surrounding the special shirts worn before the La Liga match against Elche. Mbappé, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konaté wore the shirts in a way that obscured part of the message supporting Ceuta, while most of their teammates displayed it in full.

Mbappé stressed that his decision should not be interpreted as a lack of sympathy for the Spanish city. The Frenchman said:

“The first thing I want to say is that I stand in full solidarity with Ceuta and with all the victims.”

However, the striker added that he also wanted to draw attention to migrants affected by the crisis:

“But I also wanted to make a gesture and spare a thought for all the immigrants who have lost their lives and who are also living in harsh conditions.”

Mbappé later explained that he did not want to prioritise one form of suffering over another and said his intention was to send a message of peace.

The incident took place before Real Madrid's 3-2 away victory over Elche. The club subsequently defended the players' freedom to express their own position, while maintaining its support for the solidarity initiative.

It is worth noting that Mbappé remains one of Real Madrid's key figures. Transfermarkt currently values the 27-year-old French forward at €180 million.
