Real Madrid's war with Spanish refereeing has claimed another battlefield, this time before a ball is even kicked.

Details: According to SPORT, the Santiago Bernabéu will be the only La Liga stadium where referees will not be able to speak before and after matches this season. This is due to Real Madrid's restrictions on broadcasters' TV connections, which are incompatible with the refereeing committee's new transparency protocol. At every other La Liga stadium, referees will be allowed to speak before and after games.

Spanish football's technical referees' committee confirmed a historic package of changes for the 2026/27 season, including referees explaining their decisions on television and plans to make conversations in the VAR room public. The initiative is designed to increase transparency after years of controversy, but Real Madrid, whose own TV channel has repeatedly attacked officials, have effectively blocked the new format at their home ground.

The decision is bound to fuel an already toxic debate: Madrid have spent years accusing Spanish officials of bias, while La Liga recently introduced the so-called Vinicius law and other measures partly inspired by incidents involving the capital club. It's worth noting that the Bernabéu, with its 85,000 capacity, will now be the only arena in Spain where fans never hear the referee's version of events.
