Samuel Eto’o Under Fire Over Broadcast Initiative: A Campaign Promise Unfulfilled?
The head of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto'o, is under fire for a recent action taken by the organization he oversees. Critics see it as a betrayal of the pledges he made during the 2021 campaign.
Last weekend, Fecafoot aired a second-division match between Apejes and Yafoot (1-1) on its Facebook channel, Fecafoot TV. Some hailed the action as a "innovation," while others weren't so sure. Eto'o was chastised by observers for not fulfilling his promise three years prior to hire professional broadcasters for Cameroon's leagues.
It didn't take long for journalist Alain Dénis Ikoul to refer to the Facebook broadcast as an "admission of incompetence." According to him, this compromises the league's professionalization. "On a federation's Facebook page, no professional league broadcasts for free. Ikoul said, "Broadcasters who pay for TV rights that are redistributed to clubs are the ones who win championships."
Eto’o’s comment under the live broadcast further fueled the backlash, with critics demanding action to secure professional partnerships as promised. The football community awaits the fulfillment of Eto’o’s ambitious vision for Cameroonian football.
