Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), is escalating his battle against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as he fights to validate his candidacy for a seat on the CAF Executive Committee. The committee is set for renewal during the organization’s elective General Assembly in March.

Eto’o’s candidacy was rejected due to sanctions imposed by CAF over his association with the betting company 1xBet. Additionally, FIFA has accused him of offensive behavior and violations of fair play principles. In response, the Cameroonian legend filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on January 28, according to Africa Intelligence.

Other Rejected Candidates Follow Eto’o’s Lead

Eto’o is not alone in his legal battle. Other candidates who were also rejected have taken similar steps. Among them is Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, president of the Congolese Football Federation (Fecofoot), who is viewed as a dissenting figure by the inner circle of CAF president Patrice Motsepe. Mayolas also has a FIFA suspension from 2015.

Similarly, MacLean Letshwiti, former president of the Botswana Football Association (BFA), has appealed to CAS after failing to secure support from his own federation. Meanwhile, Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the current Central African representative in CAF’s Executive Committee and a close ally of Motsepe, has not been mentioned in the controversy. The final decision on these appeals is expected in the coming months.

Eto’o Picks Messi as the Greatest Player in History

Beyond football politics, Samuel Eto’o is widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest players, having played for elite clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan. Despite having played alongside several football legends, Eto’o has declared Lionel Messi the greatest player of all time.

In a 2020 interview with Diario Marca, Eto’o stated: “It’s normal for Barcelona to rely on Messi. He is the best player in the world and the best of all time. If I were a coach, I would build the team around him. Every team in the world wants Messi.”

Even though he shared the pitch with legends like Ronaldinho, Andres Iniesta, Frank Lampard, and Thierry Henry, Eto’o firmly believes Messi is unmatched.

From Real Madrid to Barcelona: Eto’o’s Journey

Eto’o began his European career at Real Madrid in 1996 but never got a real chance with the first team. He was loaned out multiple times to clubs like Leganés, Espanyol, and Mallorca. After making only seven appearances for Real Madrid, he permanently moved to Mallorca in 2004, where he established himself before joining Barcelona.

Reflecting on his time at Madrid, Eto’o said: “I have no problem with Real Madrid. They gave me the chance to dream of becoming a footballer, but I never had the opportunity to play there. I found success elsewhere and became a proud Barcelona player.”

Despite having begun his career in Madrid, Eto'o became a legend at Barcelona, where he was regarded as one of the team's finest attackers ever and a genuine symbol of African football.
