Miguel Ángel Russo is on the verge of returning to Boca Juniors, with San Lorenzo’s elimination speeding up negotiations. According to TyC Sports, the club’s football board has reached a verbal agreement with the 69-year-old coach. However, the official announcement hinges on two unresolved matters: Russo’s release from San Lorenzo and Fernando Gago’s still-unfinalized contract termination.

In the post-match press conference following San Lorenzo’s 1–0 loss to Platense, Russo avoided confirming his exit but left room for speculation. “I’ll speak when I decide and when everything that needs to happen has happened,” he said, offering no denial of the Boca links. San Lorenzo officials are expected to meet with his agent in the coming days to discuss the terms of his departure.

Boca hopes to have Russo on the training ground by Tuesday, when the squad reconvenes at Ezeiza after a week off. If timing becomes an issue, youth coaches Silvio Rudman or Norberto Pompei will temporarily step in, with Mariano Herrón already out of the picture due to internal tensions.

Meanwhile, Boca’s board is actively planning for the Club World Cup. Reinforcements are being sought in defense, midfield, and attack, with Aníbal Moreno and Fausto Vera reportedly topping the wishlist. Russo is expected to have a strong say in upcoming transfer decisions once he formally joins.
