Benin earned their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory as Yohan Roche’s deflected first-half strike secured a 1-0 win over Botswana in Rabat on Friday. The defender combined with captain Steve Mounié, returning after missing the opener, before looping his finish over goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko in the 28th minute to make history.
Botswana pushed back and went close when Mothusi Johnson’s superb free-kick struck the crossbar. After the break, Phoko made key saves to deny Tamimou Ouorou as Benin held firm. Both sides complete Group D matches Tuesday, with Benin facing Senegal and Botswana meeting DR Congo.
The win lifts Benin’s qualification hopes after earlier defeat and gives their campaign a crucial lifeline in a tight section battle. AFCON 2025 hopes now remain alive.
