RIP. Legendary champion dies suddenly after car crash

The Irish sporting community has been plunged into deep mourning.

Details: News has emerged of the tragic death of former Donegal Gaelic footballer and 1992 All-Ireland champion James McHugh. The 62-year-old James lost his life in a severe car accident in County Cavan.

The incident occurred on the N3 near Drummallaght. The car driven by McHugh collided with a van. His wife Noreen, who was with him, suffered serious injuries and was urgently airlifted to a Dublin hospital.

James McHugh has etched his name into sports history as one of the key players in the Donegal squad that captured the county’s first-ever All-Ireland championship title in 1992, defeating Dublin in the final at Croke Park. That same year, he was honored with the prestigious All-Star individual award.

His brother Martin also played for that iconic team, while his sons and nephews have carried on the family tradition with the Donegal squad. Representatives from the local federation and his home club Kilcar have expressed their deepest condolences to the bereaved family, calling McHugh a true legend and a hero of his county.
