RIP. Italian football legend has died
Italian football is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures.
Details: Legendary Inter and Italy national team footballer Sandro Mazzola has passed away at the age of 83. The Milan club officially confirmed the news on September 19, expressing its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of its former captain.
Mazzola spent his entire professional playing career at Inter, representing the Nerazzurri from 1961 to 1977. During that period, he made 565 official appearances and scored 158 goals, becoming one of the most recognizable figures in the club's history.
The legendary midfielder was a central figure in the famous Grande Inter side managed by Helenio Herrera. Together with the Milan giants, he won four Italian league titles, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.
Mazzola also enjoyed a distinguished international career. He helped Italy win the 1968 European Championship and reach the final of the 1970 World Cup, where the Azzurri finished as runners-up.
It is worth noting that Mazzola scored twice against Real Madrid in the 1964 European Cup final, helping Inter secure a historic 3-1 victory and claim their first European title. He was also the son of Valentino Mazzola, the legendary Torino captain who died in the Superga air disaster in 1949.
