The scandal surrounding the Argentina vs Egypt match has spilled far beyond the football pitch.

Details: According to The Telegraph, suspected Egyptian hackers gained access to accounts belonging to the Argentine Football Association and sent out a fake email. The message claimed that Argentina had allegedly benefited from corrupt refereeing decisions in their match against Egypt.

Recipients of the email were supposed to believe that the Argentine association itself had admitted to the dubious nature of their team’s victory. However, the AFA announced that the messages were neither created nor authorized by its staff and urged everyone to disregard them completely. The cyberattack is still under investigation.

The incident followed a dramatic World Cup round of 16 clash, where Argentina trailed Egypt 0–2 but mounted a stunning comeback to win 3–2. The Egyptian side was furious with the officiating by François Letexier and questioned the fairness of several crucial decisions.
