Raids after World Cup fiasco! Police storm football federation office
The World Cup disaster has unleashed a full-blown storm in South Korean football.
Details: South Korean police have raided and seized documents at the offices of the Korea Football Association as part of an investigation into possible irregularities in the appointment of Hong Myung-bo as national team head coach in July 2024.
The investigation took place at the association's headquarters in Cheonan, located about 90 kilometers from Seoul, as well as at the organization's office in the South Korean capital.
According to KBS, the search warrant cited possible obstruction of operations. Two days before the raid, police questioned Hong Myung-bo as a suspect to determine whether his appointment complied with the federation's internal regulations.
Previously, South Korea's Ministry of Sports found that the association had violated its own procedures in Hong Myung-bo's appointment. Specifically, the coach's meeting with the technical director was not recognized as a proper interview. At the time, however, the ministry found no evidence of illegal activity and did not require the termination of the coach's contract.
It is worth noting that Hong Myung-bo stepped down at the end of June after South Korea crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage. The team defeated Czechia 2-1, but then lost to both Mexico and South Africa — each time by a 0-1 scoreline.
