Racist scandal in La Liga: Rafa Mir insults Espanyol’s Moroccan player over his origin

Spanish football has once again found itself at the center of a racist scandal.
Details: During the match between Elche and Espanyol, a clash broke out in which Elche striker Rafa Mir made a disgraceful remark towards defender Omar El Hilali. Mir hurled the following insult at the player of Moroccan descent:
“You came here on a boat” — an extremely offensive and xenophobic cliché often used in Spain against immigrants from North Africa.
As soon as news of the racist insult directed at Omar El Hilali emerged, the match’s chief referee immediately activated La Liga’s official anti-racism protocol. The game was brought to a complete halt for three minutes, during which a stadium-wide warning was broadcast about the unacceptability of discriminatory behavior.
The situation appears even more outrageous given Rafa Mir’s own background. It’s worth recalling that at the end of 2024, the footballer was arrested on charges of sexual assault. He is currently out on bail and continues to play at the professional level while the legal proceedings are ongoing. Now, he faces a new accusation—this time, of racism.
