Punishment definition. FIFA suspends Emiliano Martinez for two matches
One of the most memorable images from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar featured Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, holding the Best Goalkeeper award near his genitals. Though his behavior sparked outrage, Martínez repeated the stunt with the Copa América trophy, leading to disciplinary consequences.
Details: The Copa América final took place on July 15 in the U.S., but the Argentine squad decided to celebrate with their fans by showcasing the trophy at their first home match. This occasion came during a World Cup 2026 qualifier against Chile. Once again, Martínez couldn’t resist and placed the trophy near his genitals.
In the subsequent match, Martínez's conduct once again drew attention for the wrong reasons. After Argentina’s 1-2 loss to Colombia, he struck a television camera in frustration.
FIFA reviewed Martínez’s actions and imposed a two-match suspension.

Currently, Argentina leads the South American World Cup qualifying standings, with six wins in eight matches. They hold a two-point advantage over their closest rival, Colombia.
Additionally, Emiliano Martínez has been fined 15,000 Swiss francs, approximately $18,000, in conjunction with his suspension.
