Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has, for the first time, addressed the rape allegations made against him in February 2023. Speaking on the YouTube program ABTalks, the Moroccan footballer firmly denied the accusations, which he believes were an attempt at extortion.
The case arose when an unidentified woman accused Hakimi of sexual assault. While the woman did not press charges, Paris prosecutors initiated an investigation and later filed charges against the player.
Hakimi described the allegations as baseless and financially motivated:
"When we left this matter to the court, we saw it was just a way of blackmail. They wanted to blackmail me, that’s why we filed a lawsuit and we won. The court handled the matter with efficiency, and we were able to quickly resolve it so everyone will know the truth and we can speak about the topic easily," said Hakimi.
The footballer, one of Africa’s highest-paid athletes, believes his wealth made him a target for fraudulent schemes:
"People like me become easy targets for those who seek to exploit or extort wealthy individuals."
The scandal had a significant personal impact on Hakimi, as his wife, actress Hiba Abouk, filed for divorce amidst the controversy. The couple shares two children.
