Porto Legend Pinto da Costa Dies, Congolese Defender Mbemba Pays Tribute
Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, the former president of FC Porto, died at the age of 87. He won two Champions League titles and 69 trophies throughout his 42-year tenure as the club's leader. After he resigned in 2024, André Villas-Boas took over as leader.
Congolese defender Chancel Mbemba, who played for Porto between 2018 and 2022, expressed his condolences on social media:
"Rest in peace, President Pinto Da Costa. I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to join this great club. My sincere condolences to his loved ones and the entire Porto family."
Jose Mourinho, who won the 2004 Champions League with Porto under Da Costa’s leadership, also shared an emotional tribute:
"Mourinho, you were the coach who brought me the greatest joys"—those were your words, Mr. President.
The football world mourns the loss of a legendary figure who shaped Portuguese football history.
