Peru’s World Cup Hopes Alive but Hanging by a Thread
Peru’s 1–0 defeat to Venezuela in Maturín dealt a heavy blow to their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes. With just 10 points from 14 matches, the team sits second to last in the CONMEBOL standings, five points behind Venezuela, which currently holds the intercontinental playoff spot.
The path to the playoff is narrow, but not entirely closed. To have a realistic chance, Peru must win their two remaining home matches against Ecuador and Paraguay, and pick up at least one point away, either in Colombia or Uruguay. But even that won't be enough without help from elsewhere.
Venezuela faces a tough final stretch with away games against Uruguay and Argentina and a home clash against Colombia. Bolivia, just one point behind Venezuela, also remains in the hunt but must face Chile, Brazil, and Colombia.
An ideal scenario for Peru would see Venezuela and Bolivia draw when they meet and then drop points in their remaining matches. Meanwhile, Chile—also on 10 points—could complicate things further depending on their form.
Peru’s destiny is no longer in its own hands. But with 12 points still to play for, and plenty of twists left in the qualification race, the dream of a playoff berth remains mathematically alive.
