Four Teams, One Spot: The Fierce Battle for South America's Playoff Place Four Teams, One Spot: The Fierce Battle for South America's Playoff Place

With Argentina already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, all eyes in South America are now on the fight for the intercontinental playoff spot. Following the latest round of qualifiers, Venezuela currently holds that seventh position with 15 points—but Bolivia, Peru, and Chile remain firmly in contention.

Venezuela’s 1–0 win over Peru in Maturín was key. La Vinotinto now edges Bolivia (14 points), while Peru (10) and Chile (9) trail behind. With five matches remaining, head-to-head duels will be crucial.

Bolivia still has to travel to Venezuela and Colombia, and host Chile and Brazil. Venezuela, meanwhile, faces tough away matches in Uruguay and Argentina, but has shown strength at home. Peru faces a difficult path, with trips to Colombia and Uruguay, and home games against Ecuador and Paraguay. Chile, at the bottom of this chase, must host Argentina and travel to Bolivia and Brazil before finishing at home against Uruguay.

Only one will earn the playoff berth. The race is tight, the fixtures unforgiving, and the margin for error nearly nonexistent. South America’s road to the World Cup is far from over.
