Details: On Wednesday, October 28, Liverpool hosted Chelsea at Anfield in the fourth round of the 2026/27 English League Cup. The two Premier League giants played out a 1-1 draw in regulation time, leaving their fate to be decided from the penalty spot. Liverpool ultimately held their nerve to win the shootout 6-5 and secure a place in the quarter-finals, eliminating their London rivals from the competition.

Chelsea struck first in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty to put the visitors ahead. However, Liverpool responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, Cody Gakpo stepped up to take another spot-kick and made no mistake, bringing the score level at 1-1 before half-time.
Neither side managed to find a winning goal after the break, meaning the contest had to be settled by a penalty shootout. With a place in the last eight at stake, the tension continued until Liverpool eventually prevailed 6-5.
For Liverpool, the victory means their journey in the League Cup continues, while Chelsea's hopes of lifting the trophy this season have come to an end.
It's worth noting that Liverpool also defeated Chelsea on penalties in the 2022 League Cup final. That encounter finished 0-0 after extra time, before the Merseyside club won an extraordinary shootout 11-10 at Wembley.
