Pedro Gonçalves Slams CHAN 2024 Postponement Amidst Angola’s Ambitions
Angola’s national team coach, Pedro Gonçalves, has voiced his surprise and disappointment following the postponement of the CHAN 2024 finals. Originally scheduled to start soon, the tournament’s delay, attributed to infrastructure issues, has disrupted the momentum of various national teams, including Angola.
Speaking about the decision, Gonçalves remarked, "It is with total surprise that I was informed of the postponement of CHAN 2024. It is already strange that the tournament’s name no longer matches the year we’re in, and now it has been delayed further. This decision harms African football’s credibility and especially impacts the players who were focused on an objective that is now postponed."
In Group D, Angola will play Kenya, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia in an attempt to win a historic CHAN championship. Gonçalves, who has been with the squad since 2019, is committed to helping Angola win this event, which is their sixth time participating.
Gonçalves, known for his calm attitude and technical skill, led Angola to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and won the COSAFA Cup with a convincing 5-0 victory over Namibia. This expertise, along with his tactical emphasis on strong defense and swift transitions, will be critical as Angola seeks its first CHAN crown.
