Peace is possible! Ronaldo's bombshell statement changes everything for Portugal
The most explosive feud in international football may finally be heading for a truce. Cristiano Ronaldo's extraordinary 2,000-word statement appears to have done what weeks of emergency meetings and airport chases could not.
Details: According to Record, the Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has been convinced by Ronaldo's public statement that peace with head coach Jorge Jesus can be accomplished. In the lengthy letter published this week, the 41-year-old captain admitted he was wrong to leave the national team camp, apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese people, and demanded to be punished without any mitigation, arguing that being captain is an aggravating factor rather than an excuse. At the same time, Ronaldo revealed that Jesus had broken his word to him twice, once by leaving him on the bench against Norway after promising 30 minutes, and again by contradicting their private agreement at a press conference.
The statement, remarkable for both its candour and its calculated tone, pulled back the curtain on the entire saga. Ronaldo revealed that after the 2026 World Cup he had prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese people and intended to retire, only for Proença to persuade him to stay during the flight back from the United States, even asking his opinion on the candidates to replace Roberto Martinez. The captain confirmed he endorsed the choice of Jorge Jesus, whom he described as the right appointment. The crisis ignited in Oslo on September 27, when Ronaldo warmed up for half an hour against Norway without being introduced, and exploded when the coach's subsequent press conference publicly contradicted the version of events the pair had agreed in a meeting also attended by Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho. Ronaldo flew home, was chased to the airport by Jesus and Proença in a failed last-ditch attempt to stop him, and watched from afar as Portugal won all four of their Nations League matches to book a March 2027 quarter-final.
It's worth noting that Ronaldo also used the statement to shut the door on retirement talk, promising that one or more farewell matches will be arranged when the time comes, and confirming he will be available for selection once any suspension is served, provided he is fit and scoring for Al-Nassr. Under Article 160 of the federation's disciplinary code, an unjustified walkout carries a ban of one to six months. Proença had already described the affair as a misunderstanding to be resolved internally, Jesus has said the door remains open if Ronaldo wants to return, and with Denmark and Wales awaiting in November, the federation's belief that peace is achievable offers the first genuine hope that the captain's international story will not end at a Copenhagen airport gate.
Reminder: The door is open! Jesus promises Ronaldo a call-up if he wants to return.
