Orlando Pirates graduate shocks MLS! Mbokazi storms into the top four
Orlando Pirates can take pride in another former player making a huge impression abroad.
Details: Major League Soccer has officially unveiled its 2026 22 Under 22 ranking, with former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi taking an impressive fourth place. The 21-year-old Chicago Fire centre-back finished behind only Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan and Red Bull New York duo Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti.
The annual MLS list recognizes the league’s leading young players, with candidates required to be 21 or younger before Decision Day. The ranking was determined by an expert voting panel that included coaches, general managers, sporting directors, Apple TV talent and selected media representatives.
- 1. Cavan Sullivan — Philadelphia Union
- 2. Julian Hall — Red Bull New York
- 3. Adri Mehmeti — Red Bull New York
- 4. Mbekezeli Mbokazi — Chicago Fire FC
Chicago Fire signed Mbokazi from Orlando Pirates in December 2025 on a contract running through 2029, with a club option for the 2029/30 season. His debut MLS campaign quickly attracted attention: the South African received the most fan votes for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, although a thigh injury later ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
It is worth noting that Mbokazi leads the entire 2026 22 Under 22 class in senior international experience with 15 appearances for South Africa, including four matches at the 2026 World Cup.
Reminder: Orlando Pirates sound the alarm ahead of the derby: key player could miss clash with Kaizer Chiefs
