“Ordinary standards aren’t enough for me!” Yamal makes bold statement after Spain triumphs
Lamine Yamal has no intention of letting early success lower his hunger for more.
Details: The 19-year-old Barcelona and Spain winger has reflected on how his perception of success has changed since winning Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. Yamal admitted that two years ago he did not fully understand the scale of what was happening around him, while now he is already thinking about further trophies and even bigger ambitions with both Spain and Barcelona.
“After the [2026 World Cup] final, my family were extremely happy. The problem is that they don't really know what losing is like. I go to the Euros — I win it. I go to the World Cup — I win it. It makes everything look easy. At one point I thought: ‘When I don't win, they'll decide I'm no good.’ I told them: ‘Calm down, there will be plenty more World Cups ahead.’ I need to play more and win more. At the Euros, I didn't even understand who I was, where I was or how important everything happening around me really was. I could sit an exam and then play against France the next day because I genuinely didn't grasp the difference. I won it and thought: ‘Well, that's good, but the World Cup is better, isn't it?’ Now I understand what the Euros mean. I know what the World Cup is, although I think you only fully understand it when you go to the next one and lose. We still have so much to do. Why shouldn't we become the best national team in history? The best Barcelona? And if there is anyone in the world who doesn't rest on their laurels and isn't satisfied with ordinary standards, it is me,” Yamal said.
It is worth noting that Yamal has started the new domestic campaign in spectacular form. According to Barcelona's official data published on September 22, the winger had recorded seven goals and four assists in his first seven LaLiga appearances of the season.
