On this day: Morocco reached the 2022 World Cup semifinals two years ago
Today's date holds a special place in the history of African football, and here’s why.
Details: Exactly two years ago, on December 10, 2022, Morocco defeated Portugal 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup. The only goal of the match was scored by Youssef En-Nesyri in the 42nd minute.
This victory made Morocco the first African team to ever reach the semifinals of a World Cup. However, their journey ended in the next round with a 2-0 loss to France.
The match is also remembered for Portugal’s coach Fernando Santos deciding to bench Cristiano Ronaldo. The legendary forward was brought on only in the 51st minute.
Reminder: It was recently announced that the 2034 World Cup, hosted by Saudi Arabia, will be held in winter for only the second time in history.
