The international break has brought Liverpool an unwelcome fitness scare.

Details: Liverpool have confirmed that Alexander Isak will return early from international duty after suffering a minor injury. The striker will not take part in Sweden’s three remaining fixtures during the current international window and is heading back to Merseyside.

The 27-year-old will now be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff at the AXA Training Centre. The club described the problem as minor, but no specific recovery timeline or indication regarding his availability for Liverpool’s next match has yet been provided.

Isak’s withdrawal means Sweden will have to complete the rest of the international period without one of their main attacking threats. Their remaining schedule includes Nations League fixtures against Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania.

The timing is particularly frustrating for the forward because he had been in excellent scoring form. Isak opened the scoring in Sweden’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Romania on Friday, finding the net in the 20th minute. It is also worth noting that Liverpool recently confirmed his nomination for September’s Premier League Player of the Month award after he scored three goals in three league appearances during the month.
