Ajax have added steel and experience to the heart of their midfield.

Details: Ajax have officially announced the signing of Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder has joined the Amsterdam club as a free agent and signed a contract running until June 30, 2028.

The transfer was completed without a fee after Amrabat reached an agreement with Fenerbahçe on Saturday to terminate his existing contract. Last season, the midfielder played in Spain for Real Betis on loan from the Turkish club, and he will now return to the Eredivisie.

According to Ajax, contact between Amrabat and technical director Jordi Cruyff had been ongoing since April. The midfielder said the club made it clear that they wanted him for the number-six role and that he is expected to bring balance and experience to the team. Amrabat has been handed the number 4 shirt in Amsterdam.

It is worth noting that Amrabat was one of Morocco's key figures during their historic run at the 2022 World Cup. He featured in all seven matches as the Atlas Lions became the first African national team in history to reach a World Cup semi-final.
