Official! Liverpool announce major resignation
Another major change has hit Liverpool's football hierarchy.
Details: Liverpool have officially announced the departure of sporting director Richard Hughes, bringing his spell in one of the key positions at Anfield to an end. Hughes had been responsible for major sporting decisions and recruitment strategy since taking up the role in the summer of 2024.
According to The Times, Hughes has stepped down from his position and is set to continue his career in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal. His exit represents another significant reshuffle behind the scenes at Liverpool after Michael Edwards also left his senior football role earlier this summer.
Hughes arrived at Liverpool after a long spell at Bournemouth and officially began working as sporting director on June 1, 2024. He was appointed by Edwards and immediately became one of the central figures responsible for shaping the club's post-Jürgen Klopp era.
Among the major decisions made during his time at Anfield was the appointment of Arne Slot in 2024. The Dutch coach went on to win the Premier League in his first season before leaving the club in May 2026, with Andoni Iraola subsequently taking over as head coach.
It is worth noting that before joining Liverpool, Hughes spent around a decade in Bournemouth's football structure, including several years as technical director. He also made more than 300 appearances during his playing career, primarily representing Portsmouth and Bournemouth.
