OFFICIAL. Benfica extend contract with football legend

The 2022 World Cup champion and global football legend, Ángel Di María, will continue his career in European football for at least one more season.

Today, Benfica officially announced the extension of the contract with the Argentine winger. Di María's new deal with the Lisbon club is for one season.

It was previously expected that Di María would return to his hometown club, Rosario Central, this summer. However, he had to abandon this plan due to threats to his family from fans of Newell's Old Boys, the fierce rivals of Rosario Central.

There were also reports of interest from Inter Miami, but he chose to stay with Benfica.

Di María played for Benfica from 2007 to 2010 and returned to the Portuguese club in the summer of 2023 after a successful career with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and PSG.

In the past season, Di María scored 17 goals and provided 15 assists in 48 matches across all competitions.

Benfica finished the 2023/24 season in second place in the Primeira Liga, but will nonetheless compete in the main stage of the Champions League.
