With fierce competition at the top and bottom of the standings, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has seen an unexpected season.

Title Race Heats Up

Remo Stars currently lead the NPFL standings with 54 points after 28 matches, while Rivers United trail in second place with 46 points. A fierce battle for continental qualification involves Ikorodu City, Shooting Stars, Rangers, Kano Pillars, Bendel Insurance, and Abia Warriors.

NPFL Chairman Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye has described the competition as “unprecedented,” crediting the improved match officiating for boosting teams’ confidence.

“Teams now travel for away games with the mindset of winning rather than just defending for a point,” Elegbeleye noted.

Ikorodu City’s Rise

Elegbeleye praised Ikorodu City for their remarkable transformation from early-season strugglers to serious title contenders.

“Ikorodu City’s performance has been impressive. They’ve shown that privately owned clubs can thrive in the NPFL with proper planning, recruitment, and promotion. Their journey is a testament to what can be achieved with the right approach,” he said.

Coaching Evolution

The NPFL has also seen a surge in young managers, including former Super Eagles players like Finidi George, Emmanuel Amuneke, and Daniel Amokachi, alongside homegrown coaches like Imama Amapakabo, Kennedy Boboye, and Tony Bulus.

“With the blend of young and experienced tacticians, we are creating an environment where ex-players can transition into coaching roles and where Super Eagles and international players feel comfortable playing in Nigeria due to the league’s quality,” Elegbeleye emphasized.

Relegation Battle Intense

Beyond the title race, the relegation battle remains fierce, with teams from 12th to 20th still in danger.

“While the focus is often on the top, the fight to avoid relegation is equally intense. We’ll be closely monitoring the remaining matches to ensure fairness and integrity,” he added.
