Manchester City midfielder James McAtee has landed himself in an awkward situation after disappointing a young fan outside the stadium. The player initially appeared willing to gift the boy his match shirt but suddenly changed his mind, reports Daily Mail.

It turns out that the boy, named Oaklan, was wearing a jacket with the crest of Sheffield Wednesday. McAtee, who previously played for Sheffield United, has a strong dislike for their city rivals. As a result, he decided against giving the child his prized shirt.

To make matters worse, it was later revealed that it was Oaklan’s birthday, making the incident even more heartbreaking.

His mother, Chantal Howard, took to Facebook to express her frustration, sharing how McAtee’s actions had dampened her son's special day.

"When it came to Oaklan, he changed his mind… all because of a Sheffield Wednesday badge on his coat. Never mind that he was head-to-toe in Man City gear, having spent all his birthday money in the club shop that night. Not everyone can get to the Etihad every week, but that doesn't make them any less of a fan. Moments like these shape how young supporters see the game - and their heroes. It's a shame when football forgets what really matters," she wrote.

The incident has sparked debate, with many criticizing McAtee for his reaction, while others argue that players have the right to choose whom they give their shirts to.
