‘No Room for Error’: Troost-Ekong Rallies Super Eagles Ahead of Crucial Clash with Gabon Sports247 Nigeria

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has urged his teammates to stay focused and united as Nigeria prepare to face Gabon in Thursday’s all-important 2026 World Cup playoff in Rabat, Morocco.

The match, set for the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex, will determine who advances to Sunday’s final playoff against either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo. The eventual winner will move on to the Intercontinental Playoffs in March 2026, where one of Africa’s last World Cup slots will be decided.

Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria to a silver medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, stressed that the team must be flawless in Morocco. “We’ve built great chemistry, and the mindset in camp is positive... Although preparation time is short, we’re focused,” he told Olympics.com.

He added:

It’s a one-off game on neutral ground, and we know we must win to reach the final playoff. There’s no room for error.

The defender praised the spirit in camp, noting that the Super Eagles are motivated by their goal of returning to the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Troost-Ekong also acknowledged the threat posed by Gabon’s captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been in fine form with seven goals in the qualifiers. “Gabon is a strong team... I’ve played against Aubameyang in Saudi Arabia, and I know what he brings. In Africa, you can’t underestimate any team, and we certainly won’t do that with Gabon,” he said.
