Thomas Tuchel faces a tough conversation with his dressing room.

Details: According to The Telegraph, several England squad members were left dumbfounded by the head coach’s tactical approach in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina. With a 1-0 lead, the German brought on Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, and Nico O’Reilly, aiming to shut the game down completely.

Within the squad, there was a feeling that after Anthony Gordon’s goal, Argentina could have been finished off on the counterattack by bringing on faster players. However, Tuchel opted to drop deep and defend the slender advantage at all costs.

This strategy completely backfired. In the 85th minute, Enzo Fernandez equalized, and deep into stoppage time Lautaro Martinez completed Argentina’s comeback, knocking England out of the tournament — 2-1.

One source close to the England camp noted that Tuchel was hired for his ability to manage knockout matches, but at the critical moment, the coach got it wrong. Another insider admitted that no one could understand those substitutions.

After the final whistle, Tuchel insisted he had no regrets about his decisions. Despite the painful exit, the manager still enjoys the backing of the Football Association’s leadership and intends to see out his contract through Euro 2028.

Reminder: Struggling against the elite. England have gone more than 20 years without beating a FIFA top-10 team.
