No LaLiga in China! Broadcast blackout remains amid Mbappé scandal
The Mbappé controversy continues to create serious consequences for Spanish football in China.
Details: According to EFE, China Media Group, which operates state broadcaster CCTV, has confirmed that the suspension of LaLiga broadcasts remains in place following the controversy surrounding Kylian Mbappé. The measure was introduced on October 26 and also covered broadcasts connected with the Real Madrid forward as well as advertising featuring him.
Earlier on Wednesday, CMG rejected a position attributed to Real Madrid by Spanish media that Mbappé had not intended to cause offence and that the comments represented his personal expression. The broadcaster stated that the player's words went beyond what it regarded as an issue of freedom of expression and insisted that the club could not distance itself from the situation.
Real Madrid subsequently issued an official apology to the Chinese people and said it shared Mbappé's public expression of regret. EFE later reported that CMG confirmed receiving a letter from the Spanish club through LaLiga, but the broadcaster did not announce when, or whether, LaLiga coverage would resume.
China's Foreign Ministry has also said it attaches importance to Mbappé's apology, while avoiding clarification on whether the measures against the player and Spanish football will now be lifted. It is worth noting that LaLiga has significant long-term interests in the country, including a strategic cooperation agreement with China's professional league that runs until 2029.
