Kylian Mbappé's controversy in China continues to escalate. After several major companies terminated their partnerships with the Real Madrid forward, a popular football video game has reportedly started removing promotional materials featuring the French superstar.

Details: According to The Touchline on October 27, FC Online China has removed promotional content featuring Mbappé and announced additional adjustments following the controversy. The report suggests that the backlash has now extended into the gaming industry. However, the precise nature of the additional changes has not been independently confirmed, and there is no verified announcement that Mbappé has been removed as a playable footballer.

The controversy began after a video circulated online in which Mbappé appeared to discuss a meme depicting him as former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. The forward seemingly described the historical figure as a Chinese dictator. The remarks provoked criticism on Chinese social media, although Reuters and AFP were unable to independently authenticate the recording.

The commercial consequences have been significant. Chinese companies Dongpeng Beverage, Mengniu and Milkground announced the termination of their partnerships with Mbappé. Reports also indicated that Chinese state broadcaster CCTV suspended LaLiga coverage, while promotional videos featuring the Frenchman were withdrawn. LaLiga president Javier Tebas subsequently apologised to Chinese audiences.

It's worth noting that Mbappé also issued an apology over his comments on October 27. The 27-year-old acknowledged that his words had caused offence and expressed respect for Chinese people and their history. Whether FC Online China will introduce additional restrictions involving the player remains unclear.

Reminder: Diplomatic crisis surrounding a superstar. La Liga chief apologizes to China.
