Nigerian Troost Ekong Defends AFCON Amid Disrespect Claims

Nigeria Super Eagles captain William Troost Ekong has hit back at comments undermining the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), particularly those made by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. Speaking on TalkSport, Troost Ekong emphasized AFCON’s significance in world football and its role in nurturing African talent.
AFCON’s Importance to African Football
Troost Ekong highlighted the tournament’s legacy, stating, “Africa continues to reveal itself with new generations of talent emerging, building on legendary players who paved the way. This should be recognized and celebrated.”
He further expressed pride in representing Nigeria on the international stage, saying, “Playing at the Olympics, World Cup, and three AFCONs, it’s the latter I take most pride in.”
Salah’s Future: Saudi Pro League Move?
The Nigerian defender also addressed speculation about Mohamed Salah’s potential transfer to Al Hilal amid contract uncertainties at Liverpool. “There’s massive talk about Mo Salah moving to Al Hilal. He is highly sought after and would be welcomed in Saudi Arabia,” Troost Ekong stated.
Salah has been in phenomenal form, scoring 25 goals and providing 16 assists in 27 Premier League matches this season. However, his future at Anfield remains uncertain as contract negotiations continue.
Injury Concerns Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
Troost Ekong is currently recovering from a muscle injury that has kept him out of Al-Kholood’s last two games. Nigeria faces crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, and his fitness remains a concern alongside other injured key players.
Fans hope Troost Ekong will recover in time to lead the Super Eagles in their campaign, as Nigeria needs to play well to qualify.
