Nigerian Cyriel Dessers Shines as Rangers Dominate Europa League Team of the Week
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has been named in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Week following his outstanding display in the Light Blues' 3-1 win against Fenerbahce on Thursday.
A Match-Winning Performance
The 30-year-old Nigeria international opened the scoring just six minutes into the game and later provided an assist for Vaclav Cerny’s goal before halftime. His contributions were pivotal in securing Rangers' first-leg advantage in their last-16 clash.
Dessers has now netted 22 goals across all competitions this season for Barry Ferguson’s side. His teammates Nicolas Raskin and Cerny also earned spots in the Team of the Week.
Eyeing the Quarter-Finals
Despite the strong away win, Dessers acknowledges that the tie is far from over, urging Rangers to step up their game at Ibrox next Thursday.
“Fenerbahce is a top team with quality players. We need to be at our best at Ibrox,” said Dessers. “The fans will be crucial, and I know we’re ready to finish the job.”
European Strength vs Domestic Struggles
Rangers have struggled domestically, losing their last three home league games. However, Dessers believes their European form can inspire a turnaround.
“We’ve been inconsistent in the league, but in Europe, we’ve shown great form,” he said. “We need to take confidence from this and bring that consistency into our domestic matches.”
Rangers now shift their focus to securing a place in the Europa League quarter-finals as they prepare for the second leg at Ibrox.
