Nigeria Hold Russia to 1-1 Draw in Moscow Friendly Thriller

Nigeria’s Super Eagles continued their impressive 2025 form with a 1-1 draw against Russia on Thursday evening in an entertaining international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
Own Goal Gives Russia the Lead
With several key players absent — including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Wilfred Ndidi — Nigeria fielded an understrength side against a Russian team unbeaten since 2023.
The hosts took the lead in the 27th minute when a low cross from Viktor Melyokhin deflected off Semi Ajayi and into his own net, wrong-footing goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.
Arokodare Strikes Back
Nigeria responded admirably at the break, despite the setback. In the 71 minute, Tolu Arokodare coolly slotted in the equalizer after capitalizing on a mistake made by Russian keeper Matvei Safonov, rewarding their pressure.
Strong Defensive Display
Though Russia dominated possession, Nigeria's defense , led by William Troost Ekong, Semi Ajayi and Bright Osayi Samuel , remained composed and resilient. In midfield, Raphael Onyedika and Fisayo Dele Bashiru impressed with their energy and ball distribution.
Super Eagles Keep Momentum
Under coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria are now unbeaten in all matches played in 2025, including their recent Unity Cup triumph in England. The result in Moscow adds to their growing confidence ahead of crucial 2026 World cup qualifiers against Rwanda & South Africa in September.
