In the semi-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria and Morocco battled to decide who would reach the final. However, this was far from the first time the Nigerians were involved in a match that did not end within 90 minutes.
Details: According to Opta, this was already the 11th Nigeria match at the Africa Cup of Nations to go beyond regular time. Only three national teams have played more extra-time matches than Nigeria — Côte d’Ivoire with 16, Egypt with 15, and Tunisia with 12.
In addition, nine of those 11 matches were decided by penalty shootouts. In the semi-final, Nigeria lost to Morocco and will now contest the third-place match.
We previously reported that Senegal will face Morocco in the final for the gold medals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Egypt and Nigeria will battle for the bronze medals. The third-place match will take place on Saturday, January 17, while the tournament final is scheduled for Sunday, January 18.
Reminder: The final between Senegal and Morocco will be truly historic for both teams and for the Africa Cup of Nations itself.
