Nigeria Appoints Éric Chelle as New Head Coach Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the selection of Éric Sékou Chelle as the next Nigeria national team coach, succeeding Jose Peseiro, whose contract ended. The decision comes at a tough moment for Nigeria, which has only three points from its first four games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Chelle, a former international coach of Mali, is now responsible for guiding Nigeria's national side through the remaining World Cup qualifying matches. Nigeria has had four new head coaches in the past year alone, so he is taking over after a string of coaching changes. Chelle’s predecessor, Finidi George, resigned after two matches, while technical director Augustine Eguavoen briefly stepped in.
The Super Eagles are currently four points behind group leaders Rwanda, and their next matches in March will be crucial. They will face Rwanda away and then host Zimbabwe. Only the top team in the group will secure a spot in the World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Chelle’s appointment follows unsuccessful negotiations with coaches like Hervé Renard and Janne Andersson, and the collapse of a deal with German coach Bruno Labbadia. Although there are differing views on Chelle's selection, his primary responsibility is to improve the Super Eagles' prospects of making it to the World Cup.
As the Super Eagles look to earn a spot in the 2026 World Cup, supporters are counting on Chelle, who previously guided Mali to a quarterfinal position in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), to provide stability and success.
