One of Newcastle United's key defenders, Sven Botman, has suffered a torn cruciate ligament.

As reported on the club's website, in the FA Cup match against Manchester City, the central defender ruptured the cruciate ligaments in his knee. Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week. The player will require six to nine months for recovery. Thus, he will be out for the remainder of the current season and will likely miss the start of the next one. Additionally, it's not ruled out that the defender might be sidelined for the rest of the year.

It is worth recalling that Manchester City hosted Newcastle in the quarterfinal match of the FA Cup. The favorites had no trouble against the Magpies. In the first half, the Blues took 11 shots compared to 1 from their opponents and deservedly went into halftime with a comfortable two-goal lead. Newcastle exited the FA Cup, losing 0-2.

Botman is a product of the Ajax academy. On August 17, 2018, he made his debut for the reserve team in the Eerste Divisie against Roda. On June 28, 2022, he became a Newcastle United player, signing a five-year contract with the club.
