“Never forget that we are Italy.” First comments on the Euro 2024 draw from Italian representatives

Yesterday, the draw for the group stage of the 2024 European Championship took place, followed by initial comments from representatives of various teams. They shared their thoughts on the chances and speculated on which teams might progress from their respective groups.

Italy's national team head coach, Luciano Spalletti, emphasized that much would hinge on his team's form, yet stressed their identity as Italy:

"Things could have been better, but we ended up in the fourth pot. Never forget, we are Italy.

Predictions are hard at this point; there are many months ahead. Albania has proven to be a well-organized team, but much will depend on our form at that time, our preparation, and how well we blend together.

Those who love this sport should relish this challenge; otherwise, the joy of the game is lost.

There will be situations during matches when the team might need to defend, even with ten players near the penalty area if necessary, but the goal always remains to play attractive and attacking football," quoted Spalletti via RAI Sport.

Additionally, former Italy national team captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon shared his perspective. He expressed the need for the team to operate cohesively to achieve their desired goal:

"Considering we were placed in the fourth pot, we could expect a tough draw initially. This group resembles somewhat the one we had in Euro 2012 – with Spain, Croatia, and Ireland.

Back then, we finished second and made it to the final. In the current format, the top four third-placed teams also progress to the playoffs, which boosts our chances.

We're concerned, but other teams won't be jumping for joy to have drawn Italy.

Individually, there are three or four teams with stronger squads, but when we operate as a cohesive unit with a singular purpose – I don't know how many teams are genuinely stronger than us," Buffon stated on RAI Sport.

As a reminder, following the Euro 2024 draw, Italy's national team landed in Group B alongside Spain, Albania, and Croatia.
