Today, the final two quarter-final matches of Euro 2024 will take place, concluding this stage of the tournament with the clash between the Netherlands and Turkey.
The Netherlands have gradually found their rhythm in this tournament. After a rather unconvincing group stage performance, where they secured only one victory and one draw, they went on to a resounding 3-0 victory over Romania in the Round of 16.
Turkey, despite finishing second in their group behind Portugal, secured a dramatic victory against Austria. Though the majority favored Austria, fans were treated to an incredible match featuring the fastest goal in the history of the European Championship playoffs, with Turkey emerging victorious.
Notably, the Netherlands will be without their star Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, who was included in the squad but has not played due to injury. Turkey, on the other hand, faces more significant losses, all disciplinary in nature.
Turkey's absences are more substantial. Merih Demiral, who scored twice in the previous match, is suspended for two games for his goal celebration, while Benfica midfielder Orkun Kökçü and Fenerbahçe's İsmail Yüksek will miss the match due to yellow card accumulations.
Following their Round of 16 victory, Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman expressed his belief in his team and his desire to win a significant trophy with them.
"Sometimes it's hard to explain why you play poorly or, conversely, achieve great heights. We started poorly but then found our game and began to pose problems for our opponents.
We have many talented guys on our team, but of course, we need to win something significant first for people to compare this team to the 1988 squad. Football has changed since then. In recent games, you saw that almost everyone struggled to advance to the next round."
In turn, the hero of the Turkish team's previous match, defender Merih Demiral, who will not be able to help his team today, expressed gratitude to the fans and the entire team, particularly the goalkeeper.
"I would like to highlight the incredible support of our fans. I am proud to play for the Turkish national team. I thank our supporters and the whole team. I am happy to experience these incomparable emotions.
I hope we continue our winning stride. As for our goalkeeper, Mert [Günok] had a fantastic match, saving the team in the toughest situations. Thank you to him for that."
Both teams will exert all their efforts in the battle for victory. The Dutch last reached the semi-finals of the Euros 20 years ago, while the Turks did so in 2008. The coaches will undoubtedly deploy their strongest players on the field.
To achieve such a result, the coaches will surely use their best players. The Dailysports team has prepared for you the probable starting line-ups of the teams, based on the editors' opinions and the coaches' previous decisions.
