Nepal cricket star sentenced to 8 years in prison
The Kathmandu court rendered its final decision in the case of Sandeep Lamichhane, the star of the Nepalese cricket team, who was accused of assaulting an 18-year-old girl.
Lamichhane has been sentenced to eight years of imprisonment. Additionally, the athlete is obligated to provide compensation of $3,770 to the victim. His legal representative has already stated plans to file an appeal in the higher court.
The case was initiated on August 21 when an 18-year-old girl accused the 23-year-old cricketer of sexual assault. At that time, Lamichhane was in Trinidad and Tobago, participating in the Caribbean Premier League. The police arrested him on October 6 at the Tribhuvan Airport in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu.
Upon receiving the arrest warrant for Lamichhane, he was released on bail for $19,000.
Lamichhane served as the captain of the Nepalese national team and held the esteemed status of the country's cricket luminary.
