NBA star LaMelo Ball fined $100,000 for homophobic remarks
Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for making homophobic comments, according to Bild.
Following his team’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, Ball made headlines during a post-game interview. When asked about the final offensive play of the match, he responded with the phrase, “We loaded up – no homo!”
This remark sparked immediate scrutiny from the league, which decided to impose the maximum fine on the young star.
Ball later issued an apology, stating that he did not intend to offend anyone or convey negative sentiments. He emphasized his opposition to any form of discrimination.
LaMelo Ball, who was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2021 and participated in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game, has been a key player for the Charlotte Hornets since joining the team in 2020.
In a separate legal matter, Ball and the Hornets face a lawsuit filed in May 2024. Plaintiff Tamariea McCray alleges that Ball hit her child with his car following a fan event at the Hornets’ home arena in October 2023. McCray is seeking $25,000 in damages from both the player and the team.
