Morocco threatens Senegal with legal action if it displays the Africa Cup of Nations trophy at the Stade de France
The President of the Moroccan Lawyers’ Club has announced that he has sent formal notices to the event organisers.
Tensions continue to rise over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. The Lions of Teranga, winners on the pitch, were stripped of their title by a decision of the African Football Confederation’s Appeal Committee on 17 March. However, Senegal has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Lawyers for the Senegalese Football Federation claim that CAF has not requested the return of the trophy and prizes to Morocco. Consequently, Senegal is sticking to its plan to present the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy during its international friendly against Peru on Saturday 28 March at the Stade de France.
However, Morocco is threatening legal action if the event goes ahead. According to Mourad Elajouti, President of the Moroccan Lawyers’ Club, in the absence of a suspension of the CAF Appeals Panel’s decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Morocco regards any presentation of the Africa Cup of Nations trophy by Senegal as a “usurpation of title”.
