Mohau Nkota expressed ‘hurt’ at missing out on a possible World Cup appearance for Bafana Bafana.

The Saudi Arabia-based midfielder is sidelined from the global showpiece through injury having gone under the knife while at his club Al-Ettifaq Pro League side.

Cyprus-based Thapelo Maseko was called to the side in Nkota's place, as the former Orlando Pirates man has been part of Hugo Broos' Bafana squad under the Belgian.

Now Nkota has gone to Social Media to express his disappointment at the reality of watching the spectacle from him home.

"I hardly know where to begin, but it hurts indescribably to have to miss the biggest tournament. I did everything I could to be fit for the World Cup. Unfortunately, injuries often strike at the most unfortunate times," wrote Nkota.

"I wish my team every success and will, of course, be supporting them every minute of the way! I'll come back stronger—I promise. Thanks for the supportive messages."

Bafana face Mexico on Thursday in the opening game.

The game will start at 9pm South African time.
