Mohamed Salah's Stellar Year Overshadowed by Awards Snubs
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah endured a bittersweet year in 2024, dazzling on the pitch but missing out on significant individual accolades.
Salah's numbers tell a story of consistency and brilliance. Over the 2023-2024 season, the Egyptian star contributed to an impressive 61 goals in all competitions. Last season, he scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists across 44 matches. In the current campaign, he has already notched 12 goals and 10 assists in just 19 games.
However, despite his exceptional accomplishments, Salah was conspicuously left off of the shortlist for a number of important accolades. He failed to make the cut for the Ballon d'Or, the FIFA "The Best" awards, and even the "Gerd Müller Trophy" for the best striker, all of which included players with less prolific records.
Shockingly, Salah also missed out on a nomination for the CAF African Player of the Year award for the first time since winning it in 2017. Despite his four goals and three assists in eight games for Egypt this season, he was left out.
Even while Salah's on-field exploits never cease to inspire, his absence from these honors begs the question of what standards are used to identify football's best players.
